Campers at YMCA Camp Thunderbird work to earn colored bandanas, which are awarded with great presentation during the closing ceremonies of each resident camp session. A long-time camp tradition, bandanas are earned for achieving and mastering skills and knowledge in such areas as arts, sports, fitness, outdoor skills and more. Campers can built upon their points base from year to year in order to achieve higher bandana ranks. Colors include red, blue, silver, gold and double gold. Charlotte-area YMCA resident Camp Thunderbird, operating since 1936, is one of several YMCA camps located in the Carolinas. The 100-acre camp is located about 20 minutes from downtown Charlotte, North Carolina.
