Travelers to the archaeological ruins of Tulum (Ruines de Tulum) learn about the pre-Columbian Maya site that is today a popular tourist destination. Modern-day Tulum is one of several Mexican tourist districts found in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, where many villages are dependent upon tourist dollars. Tulum, the Yucatec Mayan word for fence or wall, has architecture typical of Maya sites on Mexico's eastern coast, the Yucatan Peninsula. Tulum is considered one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites.
